After a break from undertaking walking challenges, it was back to the walking shoes for Steph – our head of education – on the 5th of July, when she took on the formidable challenge of the Stonehenge Marathon Walk, organised by Denplan/Simplyhealth. Steph used this opportunity to raise funds and awareness for Dentaid, a cause close to our hearts. Despite the relentless rain, the event proved to be a resounding success, showcasing both Steph's dedication and the collective support of the community.

In the fast-paced environment of a dental practice, ensuring seamless communication and optimal patient care is paramount. Enter the patient care coordinator (PCO)– a key role that significantly enhances the patient experience and practice efficiency.

A PCO serves as the bridge between the clinical team and patients. From the initial consultation to post-treatment follow-ups, they can help manage the entire patient journey. The role involves explaining treatment plans, discussing financial options, answering any questions patients might have and, where necessary, confirming information with the clinical team, thereby alleviating anxiety and building trust.

Dental receptionists are the face of any dental practice. They’re the first and last team member each patient encounters, from initial contact to the end of their dental care plan. They make the appointments, charge the fees, chase the referrals, and explain the treatment, and they do so with a smile on their face, kindness in their eyes, and a friendly voice that makes them the most welcoming and approachable member of staff. In October 2023, the General Dental Council (GDC) announced the news that many dental nurses had been eager to hear – they were reducing the annual retention fee (ARF) for 2024. With the payment period due to open on 10th June, and remain open for payments until 31st July, it’s time to look at what the fee will be, and to know where it actually goes.
