At the practice I work at they are immediately put through the washer disinfecter and then put through the autoclave on a wrapped cycle (after being checked visually under magnification of course!) If we are unable to be put in the washer immediately they're sprayed with 'System 3' so that blood/debris does not dry onto the instrument.
It's always good to check what HTM 0105 recommends if you're unsure.
