Wipes and surface spray

8 years 2 weeks ago #7304 by ambarose
Hi
Wipes are the best practice option but sprays can be used. If using a spray a not linting disposable cloth should be used. All sprays and wipes should be alcohol free as the alcohol bind protiens to the surfaces such as blood.. A detergent spray/wipe should be used first and then should be followed by a disinfectant spray/wipe. A detergant wipe on its own is not enough as it doesnt kill bacteria.

Hi

We use detergent wipes for chair and work surfaces as alcohol wipes can cause the leather on chairs to split. If there is a blood spill we have acticlor made up for that.

We use alcohol free wipes for the surfaces and chair. We were told they had to be alcohol free because the alcohol wipes bind proteins to the surface...especially if its blood, which is bad. I do go over visors and goggles with an alcohol wipe after I have cleaned them with the alcohol free one just to get rid of the smears!

You can still use sprays buy they're not ideal; if you're spraying them onto a contaminated surface then you can generate a contaminated aerosol. We use sprays but only spray onto a wipe or single use microfibre cloth. HTM 01-05 also states that spray and bottles should not be re- filled as they can harbour bacteria.

Hi Natalie

Yes surface sprays are generally not used anymore, we used Mikrozid wipes for our surgery and decon room.
They work very well.

Hi, what do nurses tend to use in their surgeries wipes / surface spray? I'm not sure but seem to remember something about surface sprays not being allowed because of the aerosol thing?
