Infection Control Barriers

Are infection control barriers compulsory or just 'best practice'

I've always used them in practice but my new practice doesn't use them. I always assumed they were compulsory to comply with CQC but now I vaguely remember my old practices working alongside best practice guidelines so i'm now unsure which.

I'm now curious as to what the answer is.
