Overview

This introductory session explores the increasingly recognised links between mouth breathing, snoring, and oral health. Designed for dental nurses, it will consider how these factors may contribute to issues such as dry mouth and potential periodontal concerns, as well as their broader impact on general wellbeing.

As awareness grows in this area, the session will provide a practical overview of how the dental team can identify possible signs in practice and support patients through appropriate signposting. It will also highlight current considerations around scope of practice and the evolving nature of this topic within and beyond dentistry.

This session is intended as an introduction, offering a foundation for further learning while equipping delegates with practical insights they can apply in everyday clinical settings.

Aim

To introduce dental nurses to the recognition of mouth breathing and snoring, exploring their potential links with oral and general health, and to clarify the role of the dental team in appropriately signposting patients.

Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify common signs and indicators of mouth breathing and snoring, and understand their possible impact on oral health, including dry mouth and potential links with periodontal disease.
• Recognise the wider health and wellbeing considerations associated with mouth breathing and snoring, while understanding that this is an evolving area with links beyond dentistry.
• Understand the role and scope of the dental team in signposting patients, including when and how to raise concerns appropriately and refer or direct patients to suitable healthcare professionals.
• Develop a basic awareness of treatment approaches such as orthodontic interventions and mandibular advancement devices (MADs), recognising their purpose while understanding the limits of the dental nurse's role in discussion and signposting.
