Inspiration from Victoria

V-Robertson-UpdateWe spoke to Victoria some time ago about releasing her first novel and we are now very excited to mention she has published a second novel (view here). All this whilst maintaining her role and passion as head dental nurse working in a private practice in Epping.
What first inspired you to become a dental nurse?
In 1988 I was offered a full-time job in a practice in Woodgreen. I had been working there on Saturdays, and my aunt (who was already a dental nurse there) recommended me for the job.
What types of practice have you worked in? Private or NHS? Small or large?
I have worked in both NHS and private practices. I once worked in a practice in Waltham Cross which had more than seven dentists and a large team of staff, including receptionists and dental nurses.
What area of dentistry are you most interested in?
I enjoy cosmetic dentistry the most. I’m actually enjoying seeing the results that patients are getting with the Six Month Smiles braces. It always amazes me to see how quickly teeth move into the patient’s brand new, straight, desired smile. I also like seeing complete smile transformations with the use of veneers and whitening, and the effect on patients’ confidence - it’s so lovely seeing them so happy with the results.
What have you found most challenging about being a dental nurse?
I can’t really answer that because no two days in practice and their challenges are the same. I would say that as a dental nurse I overcome challenges on a daily basis.
What lessons have you learnt along the way?
Be patient with the patients! I’ve learnt along the way to help put patients at ease before, during and after treatment.
How have you developed your career since becoming a trainee nurse?
I’m now the head dental nurse. I maintain and replenish the stock, regularly check and looking after the medical emergency equipment, perform checks on infection control throughout the practice, and keep daily checks and records.
Where do you see your career heading?
Maybe in the future I will become treatment coordinator.
Where do see the role of the dental nursing going in 2014 and beyond?
The future for dental nurses look bigger and brighter more than ever before. Dental nurses now have much greater responsibility within the practice. The courses that a GDC registered nurse can attend can help them achieve higher levels of qualifications so there role can change and they can reach towards becoming either a dental therapist or hygienist.
Just for fun…
