The distance learning NEBDN accredited Oral Health Education course is suited to registered dental nurses who desire to become qualified oral health educators. The course is an excellent stepping stone towards retraining to become a hygienist. The course takes approximately 9 months to complete and is comprised of online learning modules, a record of competence (which must be completed in clinic under supervision), and a written exam (held on Friday 13 March 2020) – see the list of exam locations below.

Who Should Apply?

You should only apply for this course if you are employed, qualified, registered, indemnified and:

  1. Have access to five of the seven specified patient groups (see groups below);
  2. Are able to meet the NEBDN record of competence requirements - View here;
  3. Have access to one or more committed mentors/supervisors;
  4. Have the self-discipline required to complete the course;
  5. Have access to a computer and the internet;
  6. Feel you are motivated enough to complete the course;
  7. Are able to attend one of the listed exam locations below.

 Course Structure

The course comprises the following:

1) Completion of an online course

2) Production of a Record of Competence portfolio (SAMPLE), to include:

  • A) Assessment of seven patients, four of whom should each be seen twice (see course outline for assessment due dates).
  • B) Production of a detailed written case study (with a word count of between 2250-2750 words) for one of the patients.
  • C) Completion of an additional project, to include either an exhibition demonstrating knowledge of the syllabus and a record of continuing professional development relating to oral health education. This may include meetings, courses, further reading and research.

Video Tutorials

The course is taught through recorded online video tutorials, which include bite-sized videos followed by multi-choice questions. You can sign up for the DNN Introduction to Oral Health Education course here to try out the learning software before signing up for the full course.


Tutor Support

Each student is allocated a tutor and assessor who will assist you virtually – both with the theory and with the clinical work. You will have access to your tutor’s email address, and tutors are available at specified times to speak by telephone. You can also speak to your tutor via online classrooms. Your tutor will assess your record of competence throughout the nine months and provide you with guidance and feedback.
